When an element composed of atoms that conveniently drop electrons (a metallic) reacts with an element composed of atoms that readily obtain electrons (a nonmetal), a transfer of electrons normally takes place, creating ions. The compound formed by this transfer is stabilized from the electrostatic attractions (ionic bonds) between the ions of oppo
